New River Valley Housing Partnership
Cost-burdened Households
Paying more than 30% of income for housing can affect a household’s ability to stay housed in the event of a crisis, leading to increased homelessness. Lack of affordable housing can also impact the ability of homeless households to find stable housing. In every locality throughout the New River Valley, the income group with the highest cost burden was homeowners and renters making less than $20,000 per year.*
